Haunted Bed and Breakfasts

Would you like to sleep with a specter? Have a little "boo" with your breakfast? If you’re intrigued by the idea of spending the night among spooks, there are plenty of haunted Bed and Breakfasts to choose from, according to an About.Com Bed and Breakfast Web site.

For instance, The Groveland Hotel in Groveland California, according to innkeeper Peggy Mosley, houses a ghost named Lyle. A gold miner during life, Lyle lived and died in the hotel. Now, those who stay in "Lyle’s Room" are subject to his sense of humor: Lyle plays with the lights, moves items around inside the room and turns on the shower. Because Lyle doesn’t like women’s cosmetics sitting on his dresser, he moves them to a sink nearby. One guest even reported seeing her cosmetics moving on their own accord. But Lyle isn’t always present to amuse Groveland guests; and when he seems absent, hotel staff think he may be cavorting with another ghost; that of his sweetheart Charlotte DeFarrir, who built and operated the Charlotte Hotel across the street.

If you’re looking for a little murder mixed in with your weekend getaway, why not spend the night in the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast in Fall River, Mass.? Not only can you check out the exact spots where, in 1892, Lizzie Borden gave her father and his second wife Abby the infamous forty whacks, but you can spend the night at the infamous house on 92 Second Street. You can even stay in Abby and Andrew’s bedrooms.

For women traveling alone, a visit to the Texas White House in Fort Worth may come with a bed partner. Several woman have reported sensing that someone was lying beside them, or climbing in and out of bed. Innkeeper Grover McMains suspects the ghost is that of a man who once lived in the house with his family.

In the Casa De La Paz Bayfront Bed and Breakfast in St. Augustine, Fla., the ghost of a young woman waits for her husband to return. Many years ago, on the last day of the young woman’s honeymoon, her husband embarked on a fishing trip after telling his beloved to pack and wait for his return. A storm came up and the new husband died when his boat capsized; instead of leaving, his bride stayed at the bed and breakfast and grieved herself to death, according to current innkeepers Sherri and Marshall Crews. The young bride’s ghost can allegedly be seen with her suitcase still packed.
You may be able to find pennies from heaven while visiting Thayer’s Historic Bed and Breakfast in Annandale, Minn. Since his death, Gus Thayer, who with his wife Caroline built the home in 1895, has been known to leave pennies around the house. Owner, chef and psychic Sharon Gammell thinks the pennies are Gus’ way of letting the living know he is still there. In addition, this bed and breakfast offers ghosts of the furry persuasion; there are reportedly three ghostly kittens on the premises. Are you ready to book your spooky getaway?
