In the Stars
By Nancy Jobes |
| The Path to the Sun
Everywhere you look and everywhere you go you are likely
to see information on your "Sign". Newspapers, magazines, web
sites, and bookstores are all carriers of what is coming up for you today,
tomorrow, or next month. Astrology is almost as popular today as it was
2000 years ago when astrologers were considered scholars, ranking in
importance with doctors and priests. You can feel guilt-free as you read
about your Sun Sign with your morning coffee, on the train, or while
surfing the ‘net. No one will burn you at the stake; this is the 21st
century! Yet, what would you think if you knew that much of what you have
been reading about yourself is at worst totally wrong, and at best poorly
incomplete?
When you read a "Sun Sign" horoscope or
description of yourself, you would not be alone in thinking that it sorely
lacks vital information. You also would not be alone even if you find
yourself thinking that there cannot be much to this astrology
"stuff", because that description of the Sun Sign you are
reading sounds nothing like you! Even if you feel that it describes
certain basics in your personality and view of the world, you (since you
are a sharp, thinking creature) had to have realized that you are not just
like 1/12th of the rest of the world. You, of course, would
be right.
The "Sign" that you call your own is simply
one part of astrology. It is the sign that the Sun is in at the moment you
are born. There are 12 signs, and the Sun passes through each from our
viewpoint here on Earth in the course of a year and spends about one month
in each sign.
|
| While the Sun is important in astrology, it
is not near to being the be all and end all to the subject. Astrology
consists of so much more than the popular Sun Signs and horoscopes lend it
credit. Each planet in our solar system, our moon, and sometimes each
asteroid, comet, planetoid, and even points in the sky are all taken into
consideration when an astrologer gives a reading.
In fact, not only isn’t a reading based on your Sun
Sign, it is based on the place and moment you are born, and therefore
every astrology chart like every individual person is
unique. Even twins born moments apart can have different charts. So, then,
what is with the big deal about the Sun in the first place?
|

|
| The Sun doesn’t really represent your
personality. It doesn’t really say much about whom you will be
compatible with in love or relationship. That stuff sells books and
magazines, but it really has very little to do with astrology as practiced
by ethical astrologers.
The Sun, rather, represents our urge to be someone or
something in life. The Sun is our Will, our Ego, and our Path. While it is
a very important part of a larger picture, it is more of a subconscious
drive than an actual list of traits unto which you were born. While we
develop traits consistent with our Sun Sign during the course of our
journey through life, the Sun actually represents a developmental craving
to BE.
So, the next time your read a description of your Sun
Sign, remember that what you are reading should be your goal for yourself.
To develop the higher qualities of the sign that your Sun falls in is a
worthwhile goal that you can implement in your daily life. You can still
read your horoscope for fun, and it can be a great starting point for
understanding the basics of the twelve Signs if you are a beginner, just
don’t sell the farm for widget stock because your horoscope told you to!
